THE LAST POEM ( 20013 )

The film recounts the love story of Amit Ray, a barrister educated in England, whose virulent intellectualism reveals itself in its opposition to all forms of tradition. He meets Labanya in a car accident and the romance builds up in the misty hills of Shillong. Amitís iconoclastism meets Labanyaís sincere simplicity and sharp intelligence. After building up their affair with fervent passion, the lovers decide to marry other suitors, without the air of tragedy. It appears to be that they feel that daily chores of living together will nullify the conspicuousness of their romance. Amit marries Ketaki, his girlfriend from Oxford and Labanya marries Sovanlal, her friend from university days. But Amit resolves this enigma of ungratified marriage in his own beatnik logic. Labanya releases Amitís own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to. The tragedy is understood by the girl who liberates him from his betrothal and disappears from his life.

Directorís Note:

It was an intensely challenging job to cinematically adapt one of the major and popular novels of Tagore. The journey of creating the visual architecture of the film from a very poetical novel was an ingenious struggle. My main thrust was to give vivacity to the idiosyncratic characters of the film and reveal the inherent lyricism of the story. The great locations around Shillong and the interplay of the clouds and rain, the misty hills gave the film its required backdrop.
